Non-US Founder EIN Turnaround Report 2026

By Francis Webb, Founder · Published 18 September 2026 · Data to 11 September 2026 · Next update January 2027

Across 85 LLC + EIN orders from founders living outside the US, placed between 11 July and 11 September 2026, the median time from a complete order to a formed LLC with its EIN was 16.4 hours. 83 of those 85 (98%) were delivered within one US business day.

This report covers orders where we formed the LLC and obtained the EIN, measured end to end. It is based on our own order records and is updated every quarter.

The last row is the strictest reading of the data. We could not time 25 of the 110 orders; see How we measured. Two of those 25 were held back at the customer's request. None of the other 23 took longer than three days.

Wyoming vs Colorado

Orders placed 1 June – 11 September 2026. The wider window gives Colorado enough orders to report.

In practice, the two states are equally fast. A difference of under three hours at the median should not decide your state. Choose on annual cost and what you need the company to do.

Why an order takes longer

1. US federal holidays. This is the most common cause. The IRS is closed on federal holidays, so no EIN can be issued that day. Founders outside the US reasonably don't track these dates, and they always fall on a weekday. Example: an order placed on a Monday that is a US holiday is ready on Wednesday, not Tuesday. The figures above count business days, so a holiday does not count against us. It does count against your plans.

2. A customer asks us to wait. Sometimes a founder asks us to pause while they confirm something on their side, such as a co-founder's details or a client's go-ahead. The clock in this report keeps running during that wait.

US federal holidays in the next 12 months

On these dates the IRS is closed. If your order lands on or just before one, expect delivery to move by one business day.

If you already have an LLC: the most common intake mistake

This section applies to our standalone EIN service, where your LLC already exists.

Upload your Articles of Organization, not your Certificate of Good Standing. The two look similar. The Certificate of Good Standing only confirms that the company exists and is current. It does not show the company's address or its registered agent, and the EIN application needs both. When we receive a certificate instead of the Articles, we have to ask for the Articles, and the order waits until they arrive.

How we measured

  • Source: our own order records.
  • Clock starts when we have a complete order: every detail and document we need.
  • Clock stops when the customer's account goes live. We form the LLC and obtain the EIN before the account is created, so this is a conservative stop point.
  • Business days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and US federal holidays (19 June, 3 July and 7 September 2026 fall in this window).
  • Headline window: orders placed 11 July – 11 September 2026. State comparison: 1 June – 11 September 2026.
  • Orders we could not time: 25 of 110 in the headline window. For these, the email on the order did not match the email on the account. We have shown the headline both ways: 98% of timed orders, and 75% if every untimed order is counted as a miss.
  • Not included: New Mexico formations; standalone EIN orders, which are not timed in this edition; internal and test orders.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a non-US founder to get an EIN for a new US LLC?
With us, the median from a complete order to a formed LLC with its EIN was 16.4 hours (85 orders, July–September 2026). 98% were delivered within one US business day.
Do US public holidays delay an EIN?
Yes. The IRS is closed on federal holidays, so an order placed on or just before one usually moves by one business day. The next one is 12 October 2026.
Is Wyoming or Colorado faster?
Not in any way that matters. The medians were 16.3 hours for Wyoming and 19.1 hours for Colorado, and 97% of orders in each state were delivered within one business day.
Can I send a Certificate of Good Standing instead of my Articles of Organization?
No. The certificate doesn't show the company address or the registered agent, and the EIN application needs both.
